AP Music Theory

In this course, students will learn to recognize, understand and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. We address fundamental aural, analytical and compositional skills using listening and written exercises. Building on this foundation, we include more creative tasks: harmonizing a melody, composing a musical bass line to provide a two-voice counterpoint, and realizing figured-bass notation. On successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to sit the AP Music Theory exam.

Please Note: Constellation Learning Institute is an online course provider and does not administer AP exams. If you attend a CLI partner school, the AP Coordinator at your institution will manage your exam registration. If you do not attend a CLI partner, you will need to arrange for exam registration either through your school or independently. Independent registration, which involves locating a physical testing site that accepts outside students, can be time-consuming and should be undertaken early in the academic year. To successfully complete this course, students will need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a reliable internet connection and a working webcam and microphone. This course may also require purchase of texts or other course materials.

This Student-Paced Course is a time-flexible format that empowers students to complete rigorous and connected learning experiences while accommodating significant outside commitments, including travel, athletics, internships and camp. Students have full access to course materials and activities throughout the term. They work closely with teachers to set individualized weekly benchmarks to create accountability and build consistency. Students interact with teachers and peers via discussion threads, collaborative readings, video posts and other media. Students have the opportunity to meet live for orientation and introduction at start of term, progress check at midterm, and culminating presentations at end of term.
