This course is the equivalent of an introductory college-level Composition course. Through intensive guided practice and the careful analysis of texts, students will hone their analytical and argumentative writing skills. Major topics considered include the analysis of rhetorical situation to frame a writer’s strategic choices; a writer’s claims and use of persuasive evidence in support of those claims; large and small-scale organization into lines of reasoning; and stylistics possibilities, effects and choices. Students will focus on all aspects of the writing process: ideation, organization, composition, reflection and revision. On successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to sit the AP English Language and Composition exam.
Please Note: Constellation Learning Institute is an online course provider and does not administer AP exams. If you attend a CLI partner school, the AP Coordinator at your institution will manage your exam registration. If you do not attend a CLI partner, you will need to arrange for exam registration either through your school or independently. Independent registration, which involves locating a physical testing site that accepts outside students, can be time-consuming and should be undertaken early in the academic year. For more information, visit the official AP website.

This Fixed-Paced course incorporates a blend of synchronous and asynchronous elements. Students and teacher meet live via zoom on a regular weekly schedule. In addition, students complete coursework including guided readings, interactive videos, text and video-based discussion threads, problem sets, individual and collaborative projects, and so on. While these activities are time-flexible, teachers sequence them with weekly deadlines to help students keep on track and encourage and support the development of productive time management skills.
CLI’s Extended Core is a selection of essential course offerings in English, Math, Science and History. These courses are scheduled to meet for additional weeks each semester to allow students sufficient time to complete the course materials. In addition, where possible and consistent with partner school timetables, CLI works with schools and families to support student engagement by scheduling additional weekly live meetings and placing meetings during regular school hours.
In some cases, students’ on-campus calendars may require that they join an Extended Core course after its official start-date — or complete an Extended course prior to its official end-date. CLI will work closely with teacher and partner school to develop individualized paths to successful course completion for these students.
