This course blends studies of science, literature and pop culture to educate students in the final frontier of human exploration. They will examine several works of science fiction as well as real space missions and scientific research to uncover the link between our imagination and technical innovations that carry us further into our universe. Students will analyze works of fiction to reveal perspectives about humanity’s place in the universe and will engage in modeling of the science and engineering principles that we can use to examine the far reaches of space now and in the future. Students will write fiction and nonfiction about space exploration as well as develop plans for two space travel missions – one based on current technology and another based on hypothetical future technologies.
