“To know the past is to know the present. To know the present is to know yourself.” In this course, we will explore the past and present of race and racism in the United States. The course will be structured around our primary text, Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racism in America, which follows five historical figures (i.e., William Lloyd Garrison and Angela Davis) and offers readers unwashed versions of who they were, and the role that racism played in their lives. Please join me for this in-depth study of racism, identity, and cultural understanding.
