This course will challenge students to investigate what music is and how it works. Students will explore the acoustical and psychological foundations of musical sound; learn to read, write and interpret standard musical notation; and develop an understanding of basic musical “building blocks”: pitch, intervals, scales, keys, chords, rhythm, tempo, timbre and form. Building on these foundations, students will embark on more creative challenges: writing two-voice counterpoint, harmonizing a melody and writing original compositions. Lessons will involve practical application to real-world examples from both popular and Western Classical music.
Note: Summer Intensives are accelerated yearlong courses offered over summer. Students in these courses should expect significantly increased workloads.
