This course is designed to help you understand the “why” behind some of the more puzzling works of contemporary art. Through our study of digital reproductions, films, and (when possible) museum visits, students will learn about the art and artists of the Pop movement and major movements that followed. This will include Performance Art, Fluxus, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Photo-realism, Video Art, Installation Art, Earthworks, and Graffiti Art. We will explore issues around race, gender, and identity by looking at artists and artworks dedicated to examining these issues. We will also explore how globalization, technology, and new media have affected the landscape of contemporary art.
