None (Upper); Introduction to American Sign Language (Middle)

Upper or Middle

In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture. Students will develop both expressive and receptive signing skills, beginning with fingerspelling and numbers, and continuing with basic vocabulary. Students will also be introduced to ASL grammar, discovering that it is a fully independent linguistic system, distinct from American English. Finally, students will master the basic conversational and cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL.

Note: For Middle School students, Introduction to American Sign Language is a prerequisite for enrollment in American Sign Language 1.
