Privilege, empathy, reciprocity, and social justice. These terms have never been more relevant to our shared world than they are now. In this course, students will be challenged to envision proactive steps they can take, as individuals and as communities, to create a better, more just world. In particular, students will explore the concepts of privilege, empathy, reciprocity, and social justice in relation to specific challenges facing the United States and the world. Subjects addressed may include equality vs equity, gender equality, healthcare, education, poverty, climate change, societal systems and infrastructure, and human rights. The course will include a historical analysis of issues related to specific regions of the world. We will discuss and analyze innovative ways to address these challenges and analyze various expert and NGO efforts in effecting practical change.
